In a Nutshell….

Fairtrade is a trading agreement to ensure that developing country producers get a fair price for the commodities they produce.

Why Should You Care About Fairtrade?

Using Fairtrade Certified™ ingredients is  one way to show your consumers that you are an ethical and responsible company. Showing you care about the developing country farmers who supply your raw materials is a great way to differentiate yourself from competitors in a cluttered marketplace.

In A Bit More Depth
Fairtrade is an alternative approach to conventional trade and is based on a partnership between producers and consumers. Fairtrade offers producers a better deal and improved terms of trade. This allows them the opportunity to improve their lives and plan for their future.

Fairtrade offers consumers a powerful way to reduce poverty through their every day shopping.

When a product carries the FAIRTRADE Mark it means the producers and traders have met international Fairtrade standards. The standards are designed to address the imbalance of power in trading relationships, unstable markets and the injustices of conventional trade.

Benefits of Fairtrade for producers
Sugar farmers who can sell to the Fairtrade market are guaranteed a Fairtrade Premium to invest in social, environment and business development.

Fairtrade standards for sugar growers ensure that:

  • Producers are organised in cooperatives (or associations) which they govern democratically.
  • The Fairtrade price and the Fairtrade Premium are paid directly to producer cooperatives that have their own sugar mills.
  • Environmental standards restrict the use of agrochemicals and encourage sustainability.
  • Pre-harvest lines of credit are given to the cooperatives if requested, of up to 60% of the purchase price.
  • A Fairtrade Premium is paid directly to the cooperative or association and is used for social and economic investments such as education, health services, processing equipment, and loans to members.
